The Foolish Fish

Activities directors and other healthcare professionals here is a great dementia resource for caregivers and healthcare professinals,

Here is information on being the best caregiver you can be

Here is a way for nurses administrators, social workers and other health care professionals to get an easyceu or two

This Short Story The Foolish Fish is quite interesting to all the people. Enjoy reading this story.

In a huge pond, there lived many fish. They were arrogant and never listened to anyone. In this pond, there also lived a kind-hearted crocodile.

He advised the fish, “It does not pay to be arrogant and overconfident. It could be your downfall.” But the fish never listened to him. “There is that crocodile, advising us again,” they would say.

One afternoon, the crocodile was resting beside a stone near the pond, when two fishermen stopped there to drink water.

The fishermen noticed that the pond had many fish. “Look! This pond is full of fish. Let’s come here tomorrow with our fishing net,” said one of them. “I am surprised we have not seen this place before!” exclaimed the other.

The crocodile heard all this. When the fishermen left, he slowly slipped into the pond and went straight to the fish. “You all had better leave this pond before dawn. Early morning those two fishermen are going to come to this pond with their net,” warned the crocodile.

But the fish just laughed and said, “There have been many fishermen who have tried to catch us. These two are not going to catch us either. Do not you worry about us, Mr. Crocodile,” they said in a mocking voice.

The next morning, the fishermen came and threw their net in the pond. The nets were big and strong. Very soon all the fish were caught. “If only we had listened to Mr. Crocodile. He had only wanted to help. For our arrogance we have to pay with our lives,” said the fish.

The fishermen took the foolish fish to the market and sold them for a good profit.

Fish Facts

Activities directors and other healthcare professionals here is a great dementia resource for caregivers and healthcare professinals,

Here is information on being the best caregiver you can be

Here is a way for nurses administrators, social workers and other health care professionals to get an easyceu or two

A fish is a vertebrate, an animal with a backbone,
which has adapted to life in the water. All fish:

  • have a backbone
  • breathe air, at least part time, using gills
  • are protected by scales
  • have a simple heart
  • have a streamlined body and use fins for swimming
What other animals are vertebrates?
Mammals (such as cats, horses, and elephants), reptiles (such as snakes and lizards), amphibians (such as toads and frogs), and birds also have a backbone.
How do fish breathe?
All animals need oxygen to survive. Fish have special organs called gills. Gills are located on the sides of a fish's head. They are made of thin sheets or membranes. After fish open their mouth and take in water, they pump it to gills. Fish absorb dissolved oxygen as water passes through gill membranes. Once oxygen is absorbed, water flows out through the gill openings.

Not all underwater animals are fish. Whales and dolphins are mammals. (A mammal is a vertebrate that produces milk to feed their young.) Jellyfish, starfish, and octopus are invertebrates. (Animals without a backbone.)

How many groups of fish are there?
There are three main groups of fishes:
1. jawless fishes like hagfishes and lampreys
2. cartilaginous fishes, like sharks, skates and rays
3. bony fishes, like tuna, eels, and trout
There are over 25,000 different types, or species, of fish in the world. That's more that all the amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals combined! About 200 to 300 new fishes are discovered and named a year. Fish come in all shapes and sizes. The smallest fish is the stout infantfish (Schindleria brevipinguis), measuring about 7 mm (0.3 in) long. Whale sharks can grow to 12m (40 ft) in length. An adult Pacific sturgeon can weigh 400 pounds, reach more than 20 feet in length and live over 100 years.

Fish Identification from Idaho Fish and Game Department, with photos, descriptions, life histories, feeding habits and angling techniques.

Where can fish be found?
Fish can be found in almost every type of underwater habitat. The Antarctic icefish can survive in water below 0° C (32° F) because their blood contains special anti-freeze chemicals to prevent their body from freezing. Fish are found in hot desert springs, in dried mud in tropical ponds and deep in the ocean.

Some live in freshwater, some in saltwater, and some in both!!! Read about Salmon, which live part of their life in freshwater and part in saltwater.

Fish Shapes
In general, fishes are streamlined with a pointed anterior, (snout), and pointed posterior, (rear), and a broad propulsive tail. This torpedo-shaped body is typical of the fastest-swimming fishes.
Streamlined means that it is a efficient shape for speeding through the water. Airplanes have a similar streamlined shape for moving through air.
How long do fish live?     Some fish live for a few weeks and some can live over 50 years. How do you know the age of a fish ?
Scientists look at growth rings on scales, and/or ringlike structures found in otoliths (small bones of the inner ear).

All about Scales
Scales help protect fish.  There are 4 kinds of scales. Follow this link for photos of scales...
Most fish are colorblind.

Oldest Living Fish
The Coelacanth is a living fossil that has changed little in its 400 million years on Earth. This ancient fish gives scientists a window into what the Earth was like a long time ago.

Easy to Do Craft for Those with Dementia

Here is a great dementia resource for caregivers and healthcare professinals,

Here is a way for nurses administrators, social workers and other health care professionals to get an easyceu or two

Here is information on being the best caregiver you can be

Here are more interesting dementia brain boosting activities

Here is a dementia music activity

This craft about color is easy to do for people of many different abilities. People with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias have many different strengths and weaknesses so this activity will allow them to make something creative and festive.
This craft uses scrunched up pieces of tissue, news, construction or any scrap paper glued to a paper form. This is a simple activity that offers lots of practice using fine motor skills that those, with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, may still be intact.
It also is good because most folks with many different disabilities can still rip up paper. Some people with dementia actually enjoy this because it seems to sooth them.

You will need: paper stock, a paper plate, or cardboard for the form, tissue paper, newspaper, construction paper or scrap paper to be scrunched and glued to the form,  glue, safety scissors to cut the form and ribbon to use to hang up the craft if you so choose

What you do: Cut the inner circle out of a paper plate, leaving an outer ring. Or cut a shape such as a heart out of cardstock or cardboard. You may have to help with this first step.

Have the participants rip the soft paper into approximately 2”x3” pieces. The size is not that important. You may have to experiment to see how easily the group member(s) can scrunch the paper.
Let them scrunch up each piece of paper, and you can have them sort the paper if they are able.
Pour some glue on a paper plate. Now ask one or more participants to dip the paper into the glue and stick it onto the form. Make sure they only use small amounts of glue. Have the gluers hold each piece of paper down for a couple of seconds until the glue starts to set.
Alternately you can put drops of glue on the form and have the gluers stick the ripped soft paper in the glue on the form. You can use colored glue so they can see it easier or have the form another color besides white so the glue can be seen easier.
Try to have the ripped scrunched paper cover the entire front plate of the form so that the plate is no longer visible. The participants can use different colors or types of paper in a random arrangement and make any sort of pattern they like.
Put the finished form on a piece of wax paper to dry for several hours or overnight.
Staple a piece of ribbon on the back of the completed form at the top so that you can hang the decoration.
You can have each person make his own decoration or you can give each participant a job depending on their strengths.
For example: you can have rippers, scrunchers and gluers. You can work on this craft in several sessions. You can let the participants do what they can and have you or someone else finish what they cannot complete when the forms are drying.
You can have music in the background as the group members are working on the project or you could have a discussion about the holiday or event you are making the decorations for.

A Flag Incident
By M. M. Thomas
(Adapted)

When marching to Chattanooga the corps had reached a little wooded valley between the mountains. The colonel, with others, rode ahead, and, striking into a bypath, suddenly came upon a secluded little cabin surrounded by a patch of cultivated ground.

At the door an old woman, eighty years of age, was supporting herself on a crutch. As they rode up she asked if they were "Yankees," and upon their replying that they were, she said: "Have you got the Stars and Stripes with you? My father fought the Tories in the Revolution, and my old eyes ache for a sight of the true flag before I die."

To gratify her the colonel sent to have the colors brought that way. When they were unfurled and planted before her door, she passed her trembling hands over them and held them close to her eyes that she might view the stars once more. When the band gave her "Yankee Doodle," and the "`Star-Spangled Banner," she sobbed like a child, as did her daughter, a woman of fifty, while her three little grandchildren gazed in wonder.

They were Eastern people, who had gone to New Orleans to try to improve their condition. Not being successful, they had moved from place to place to better themselves, until finally they had settled on this spot, the husband having taken several acres of land here for a debt.

Then the war burst upon them. The man fled to the mountains to avoid the conscription, and they knew not whether he was alive or dead. They had managed to support life, but were so retired that they saw very few people.

Leaving them food and supplies, the colonel and the corps passed on.

Ticket to Ride

I think I'm gonna be sad,
I think it's today, yeah.
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away.

She's got a ticket to ri-hide,
She's got a ticket to ri-hi-hide,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.

She said that living with me
Was bringing her down yeah.
She would never be free
When I was around.

She's got a ticket to ri-hide,
She's got a ti

cket to ri-hi-hide,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.

I don't know why she ridin' so high,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.
Before she gets to saying goodbye,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.

I think I'm gonna be sad,
I think it's today yeah.
The girl that's driving me mad
Is going away, yeah.

Ah, she's got a ticket to ri-hide,
She's got a ticket to ri-hi-hide,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.

I don't know why she ridin' so high,
She ought to thin

She ought to do right by me.
Before she gets to saying goodbye,
She ought to think twice,
She ought to do right by me.

She said that living with me,

When I was around.

Ah, she's got a ticket to ri-hide,
She's got a ticket to ri-hi-hide,
She's got a ticket to ride,
But she don't care.

Lyric to "Leaving on a Jet Plane"

All my bag

s are packed I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door

I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin' it's early morn
The taxi's waitin' he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Every place I go, I'll think of you
Every song I sing, I'll sing for you
When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Guitar Solo

Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Close your eyes I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times, I won't have to say

So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh baby, I hate to go

Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go

Barbara Jacobs suggests this formula for success
A two-part music session.

In the first part, provide a positive musical experience by beginning with a warm-up activity through reminiscing. I begin by playing CDs of favorite recording artists such as Judy Garland and Nat King Cole. When in a group setting, such as one led by an Activity Director or other care professional in a care facility, have a brief discussion of the artist’s background. (Most CD covers will give you a short biography and it is easy to find such information on the Internet). This will usually generate discussion and get people in the mood to sing.

The second part of the class consists of an old fashioned sing-along

I feel you can hand out song sheets. Sometimes I find them to be a hiderance because some dementia folks cannot follow them. Most residents(clients) know most of the words to a song anyway

Next time some good sing a long videos

Here is a proposed study trying to find out what we already know
Ann Kolanowski and Elouise Ross Eberly Professor of Nursing at Penn State . will be doing a new study because of a $2.4 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health.

"Delirium is prevalent in people with dementia," said Ann Kolanowski, Elouise Ross Eberly Professor of Nursing, Penn State . "We found in our pilot study that many older adults who have dementia experience a medical problem often develop delirium, and it doesn't necessarily resolve by the time they are discharged from the hospital."

Delirium, defined as a state of mental confusion, occurs in over half of all hospitalized older adults with dementia. If delirium continues, it can interfere with patient rehabilitation and there is a very high risk of permanent institutionalization, said Kolanowski.

The grant, from NIH's National Institute of Nursing Research, was awarded to Kolanowski and colleague Donna Fink, professor of nursing, Penn State . The researchers will test an intervention consisting of cognitive activities to help patients with delirium superimposed on dementia.

"Cognitive processing helps restore cognitive functioning," said Kolanowski. "In delirium, improved cognitive function is accompanied by improvement in physical function and resolution of delirium."

Flower and Garden Tips

Growing chives - why? ..Chives are probably the easiest herbs to grow in the garden.

They can be added to just about any meal you would normally add onions to, and they're very good for you!

Chives are the smallest of the onion family and there are a fair few types to choose from.

I've grown 'garlic' chives for years in the garden, and they are really useful, especially if you've run out of garlic.

You can eat every part of the chive plant. The edible flowers add colour to the salad bowl or other garnish, the grass-like leaves can be cut up and added to cooked potatoes, salads, sauces and even sandwiches, and the bulb can be used as a mild onion.
Although the flower stalk is edible, once the flower has been produced, there is very little taste or nutrients left in the stalk. Discard the flower stalks, and crumble the flower heads into your salad.

Growing chives: positioning

Chives like sun but do like a little shade during long hot summers. They are fairly good at tolerating drought conditions, but are happiest in moist well-drained soil.

Place chive plants in different parts of the garden, so you've always got something to pick and eat!

Sowing and Planting:
Chives do very well from seed. Plant a few seeds in a pot very early in the year and keep warm and watered until the seedlings are large enough to plant outside.

Plant out in well dug soil, preferably with some organic compost mixed in. You won't need to feed chives once they're in the ground, unless your ground is particularly poor, in which case you should give the chive plants a monthly feed.

Keep weed-free and watered until well established.

Growing chives in containers is also possible! Keep a pot in the kitchen. Remember to water and the plant will see you right through the season. When the flowers start to die back, cut the plant down to about 2-3 inches high and the chives will grow again.

Looking after your chives:

There really won't be much to do.... chives are 100% easy plants to grow. Don't plant near onions as they could get onion fly, but apart from that just pick and eat them!

Don't start using the chives until the plants are fairly well established - late summer in the first year of growth.

Harvesting:

Cut chives as you need them. Use scissors and leave 2-3 inches of leaf on the plant. When the flowers start to dry and die back, you can cut down the whole plant ( to 2-3 inches high ) and the chives will grow again.

Use the flowers in the kitchen or leave to bloom on the plant. The purple flowers look spectacular on a well-established plant.

After three or four years, the chive plant should be divided. Dig up carefully, then gently, but firmly, separate the clumps of bulbs and re-plant.

During the winter months your chive plant may die back completely. Don't worry, it'll come back in the spring.
