Here’s some history trivia to share with your residents:

Italian mariner Cristoforo Colombo is called Cristobal Colon in Spanish, Cristovio Colombo in Portuguese and Christopher Columbus in English.
Columbus did not set out to discover a New World. He was obsessed with finding a westward route to Asia.

In January 1492, Columbus obtained the support of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain.
Columbus’ fleet included the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. On his first voyage to the New World, Columbus commandeered the Santa Maria.

The Santa Maria was shipwrecked off the coast of what is now Haiti.
Columbus declared himself the governor of the island of Hispaniola.
Columbus made a total of four voyages to the New World, specifically the West Indies.

During his third voyage, Columbus was returned to Spain in shackles.
The first recorded celebration of the discovery of America took place in New York City on October 12, 1792 — exactly 300 years after Columbus landed in the New World.
One hundred years later, President Harrison encouraged citizens to participate in the 400th anniversary of Columbus’ voyage.

On this day, the Pledge of Allegiance, written by Francis Bellamy, was recited publicly for the first time.

In 1937, President Roosevelt proclaimed October 12 as Columbus Day.

In 1971, President Nixon made the second Monday of October a national holiday.

In early October we celebrate Columbus Day. Most people with dementia remember learning about Columbus in school. You can design a trivia game using simple facts. First you can tell the story of Columbus sailing to
America to your audience of one or more.

Then you can have a discussion about Columbus Day.

After the discussion, you can make up your own trivia game using facts in the story as well as any information the group member(s) want to include.

Here are some sample trivia questions:

    The person who discovered
    America was______________(Columbus)
    The year Columbus discovered
    America was___________(1492)
The ship that starts with the letter N that was in the Columbus fleet was the ________________(Nina)
Design as many questions as you can think of.
A little while later, see how many questions the person with dementia can answer.

Then you can sing some patriotic songs.

Finally you can discuss what most Americans do on Columbus Day.

Hopefully you have the day off and can have a nice relaxing day with your friend with dementia.

A creative activity for those with dementia

The Dementia Caregiver's Little Book of Hope [Kindle Edition]

Engaging in creative endeavors is vital for long term care residents. It is an important
way to keep them thinking. It keeps their minds working and raises self esteem.

One such activity that easily encourages creativity, I call, A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

This is an easy activity to do as long as you have the right picture for participants to describe and the right frame of mind to facilitate the discussion of the picture. As with any activity you need to adapt and modify it so that it is success oriented and failure free.

Use a picture that is colorful with large, easy to describe items, that interests your audience.

Baby photographs are one type of picture that seems to have universal appeal for nursing home residents especially those with dementia. an ideal book and flash cards Adorable Photographs of Our Baby
You act as the facilitator in some cases. Be ready to help the participants with discussion questions

Before you show the person(s) the picture, tell them you are going to help them write a
story about a picture because you know they are smart and have good ideas.

Now you are ready to show the picture(s) to the members of the group. As you ask the
questions, make sure you show the picture to the participant(s) that you are directing
the questions to. You or someone in the group can be the eyes for visually impaired
participants. However, you will see that the discussion may take on a life of its own
where the picture may not even be needed. Think of the picture as a story starter

You might begin with the question, “Do you like this picture?”

If the majority of the audience says, “No”, use a different one. It is important to have at
least two pictures available in case this happens.

Now that you have a picture most group members like, you want to ask a series of
    questions about it.

As you ask the questions about the picture, note any remarkable responses. That is,
statements about the picture that will make the story interesting. Remember to assist
members of the audience with answers to questions by providing the help they may
    need.

For example, if they are having trouble deciding what season is shown in the picture,
talk about the seasons of the year, by asking them to name the seasons. If they are
having trouble, give them a choice of two. If there is still some confusion, say that the
baby and the lady are wearing swimsuits. Ask about the season that swimsuits are
    worn in etc.

Understand that you can ask any question that you want to, which will help facilitate the
    discussion.

You may have to give two choices for an answer to a question if you do not get any
response from an open ended question. An example to the question, “How is he
feeling”, might be: “Is he happy or sad?” If you still don’t get a response, then say, “I
think he is happy because he is smiling. Do you agree (say the participant’s name)?”
Then you might extend the thought by asking about the baby’s face. There is a good
chance a participant may say that the baby is smiling. You could ask what kind of smile
he has etc... You can include these facts in the story when you write it.

Emphasize that there are really no right or wrong answers to any of the questions. Tell
them that it is just what they think the answer is. Again stress that you know how smart
    and creative everyone is.

Thus this is a good creative outlet for long term care residents even if they have
    limitations.

You may want to have the group members suggest an opening line to the story such
as: “Once upon a time”, “One sunny day”, “A few days ago” or whatever works.
After you have compiled all the answers to the questions, write a simple story about the
picture using all or some of the answers given.

Then, later on, show the picture and read the story perhaps noting some great remarks
of those that participated. Of course, be complimentary. You may want to post the story
or create a short story book. Sometimes I share ideas that were expressed in this
    group to family members.

Adorable Photographs of Our Baby, flash cards, are ideal for this activity

As with any activity, a sure way to guarantee success is for you or the group leader to be
animated and excited about doing the activity. Praising the participants for their efforts is
key to a positive outcome as well

    Fragrance Day is March 21

Don't put up a stink about March 21. It  is Fragrance Day. It is a great smelling day. The olfactory nerves in your nose, will enjoy this special day. Ladies in particular, will enjoy today because they just love perfumes. And guys, you've gotta admit that your gal's perfume attracts you to her.

Perfumes have been in use for hundreds of years. In ancient times, they were used to hide body odors. At the time, baths were infrequent. After a few days, things began to smell less than ideal. Perfumes played an important role in making the atmosphere more palatable. Today, the daily shower eliminates the bad odors. But, we still like the smell and attraction of perfume.

Celebrate today by buying some perfume or cologne for yourself, or  as a gift for someone. Make sure to put on just the right amount of perfume or cologne. Overpowering perfume ruins the value of the fragrance to the "sniffer".
Also, check your room deodorizers, and replace them with a new fragrance, if needed.

The Dementia Caregiver's Little Book of Hope [Kindle Edition]

What I did not say is that both these books are extremenly useful tools for CNAs

Here is what Vernessa LuShaun Burgess, CNA from Delray Beach, Florida had to say

The book was very insightful. I especially enjoyed the pictures that the staff
and family can use. They will help me communicate with the memory challenged and
provide a personal touch while I am doing it. The ideas were also very helpful
because they involve an involve people with all stages of dementia and can
easily be adapted for verbal and nonverbalindividuals. I give the book two
    thumbs up.
Thus have several copies of each book around so they(the CNAs) will be able to engage dementia residents more easily

    caregiver you can be

Here is a way for nurses administrators, social workers and other health care professionals to get an easyceu or two

Here are a few activities for those with dementia. In fact they could be used with any nursing home or assisted living crowd.
Always remember to adapt and modify your activities for the folks who are engaging in them.
Also if the activities are for dementia folks, make them success oriented and failure free
Dice Throw - Just throw for highest of 3 tosses.
Card Draw- Each person draws a card and the highest keeps em all
( a group version of war)
Subject Trivia- I have 3X5 cards with several trivia statements and
questions on a particular subject. It helps to have a picture too, or
a tactile aide of some kind.

The Dementia Caregiver's Little Book of Hope [Kindle Edition]

Dr. Oliver Sacks, Professor of Clinical Neurology and Psychiatry at Columbia University, in his current bestselling book, Musicophilia, writes about the amazing therapeutic effects of music on people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. He states, "Music is no luxury to them but a necessity, and can have power beyond anything to restore them to themselves and to others at least for a while." In this eye-opening book he devotes a chapter to this subject entitled, "Music and Identity: Dementia and Music Therapy." For this population Dr. Sacks describes how familiar music is the key to eliciting emotions and unlocking words that have been silent.
Researchers have discovered that the teen years around the age of 14 are when musical preferences and memories are formed. Daniel Levitin in his book This is Your Brain on Music states, "We tend to remember things that have an emotional component because our amygdala and neurotransmitters act in concert to tag as important the memories of these emotionally charged years of self-discovery." Therefore, people with Alzheimer's disease can often sing the songs they heard during their teen years, even when they can no longer remember the names of their children. This behavior is also well documented in people with advanced dementia

The Dementia Caregiver's Little Book of Hope [Kindle Edition]

Barbara Jacobs suggests this formula for success

When conducting a music program, here are some activity suggestions to consider:
    1. Visit your local music store to find CDs from the 1930s through the 1950s. Songs should be familiar, such as songs from the period when the clients were teens or young adults. Favorite popular artists, Broadway shows such as South Pacific and Oklahoma, and works of composers like George Gershwin are but a few possibilities. (Please note that with the aging of the baby boomers, one should be aware of changing musical tastes as tomorrow's older adults gradually shift more towards Elvis and the Beatles).
    2. There are many ready-made sing-along DVD and video resources available at Amazon.com and found in senior product catalogs such as S&S Worldwide (1-800-243-9232) and Sea Bay Games (1-800-568-0188).
    3. Your public library is another wonderful resource where you can borrow musical CDs or DVDs of an opera or familiar Broadway show.
    4. If you play an instrument and want to have a sing-along, play it at a slower pace and in a lower key. You can obtain lyrics from the Internet and print them out in an enlarged typeface.
    5. Create a soothing atmosphere by playing classical CDs such as Mozart and Chopin, or tune the radio to a classical music station. (Note: Playing any kind of music for longer than one hour at a time can contribute to agitation. Give participants a 20 minute break from the music before continuing.)
    6. Add singing and humming to your daily activities and encourage clients to join you in singing. Your participation in musical activities is bound to lift your spirits too.
